What Can a Mask Do for Me? Which One Should I Use?

A treatment mask creates a cocoon for the entire face and sometimes the neck and decollete. It is usually a soft, easily spread paste that should be applied totally covering all skin, but a few, such as our O2 mask or the Vita Silk mask are thin, silky masks.

I do not believe that the scientific evidence for masks having a detoxifying effect on the skin is sound. Paula Begoun, well-known in the field of skin care, states that many masks purport to offer the benefit of detoxifying properties. However, she goes on to say, there is no research showing this to be the case. The world of cosmetics or spa treatments is all about outlandish claims, not proof.

However, there are many valid purposes of facial masks. Someone with dry skin may find an emollient facial mask soothing and relaxing. Someone with oily skin may find a facial mask with oil-absorbing or soothing properties beneficial. Some masks, such as our Pumpkin Clarifying Mask, are very good at loosening blackheads and whiteheads, making removal much easier.

There are gentle, well-formulated masks available that can be used as often as necessary. Others should be done 2-3 times a week. I believe that masks are, indeed, a worthwhile option to consider, especially as an adjunct to a sensible skin-care plan. They do have a place and a purpose in the world of skin care.

And it’s awfully fun to pamper yourself. Even if it’s at home. Cleanse. Apply one of our lovely masks. Put on some of your favorite music. Relax for 20 minutes and nourish your skin. You’ll be glad that you did.
